Affordable SEO Services for Small Business

Top Five Questions:

1) When did you start your SEO business? If you don’t run an SEO business when did you first optimize a website?

2) Do you believe SEO is overrated? Why?

3) What is the worse SEO related error you have ever made? What happened?

4) What are some of the best SEO results you have obtained over the years?

5) If you were to start a new business right now, would you choose SEO or another business? In case you answered another business what would you do instead? Why?

Top Five Answers:

1) I started my first SEO business in 1998 and have seen search engine companies like AltaVista come and go so I guess you can call me old-school. Things have changed a bit over the years but the basics are still the same and content is still king.

2) It is my believe that SEO is your best investment. The organics results will pay off more than PPC, email marketing or any other way that brings in traffic. You probably say this is cliche coming from the mouth of an SEO consultant, but check elsewhere and you will find that opinions agree.

3) I once accidentally changed the on-site link structure on a WordPress managed site from .net to .com. Both domains were owned by the same webmaster (I got confused) and the .com domain became blacklisted instantly in Google. You would think that this issue would be resolved by undoing the error, but this was not the case. Oops… Well I made it up to the webmaster and at least I learned how to get rid of competitors (place multiple links to their site from a single content related blog and link to zombie pages with duplicate content — such as category, tag and author pages).

4) I was able to keep a clients website in the top 10 of Google for almost 12 years. My client had top 3 rankings for relevant single keywords and long tail keywords throughout this period. If the traffic would have been given a price tag based on PPC rates than this would have easily run into the millions each year.

5) Many people will recommend not to start a SEO business because there is so much competition out there, but it is all about how motivated you are and what your passion is all about. If you are passionate about optimizing websites for the search engines and you enjoy writing about SEO every day than I say go for it! People who blog daily on the same topic will stand out from those who don’t. However, if you feel that writing about SEO is like a punishment or heavy work, than I seriously recommend that you look elsewhere because you won’t be able to keep up with it in the long run.

My Questions:

1) What is your favorite site to visit for updates on SEO news?

2) What is your favorite WordPress SEO plugin?

3) Have you ever used optimization software? Why do you use it or why not? Do you feel optimization software is a waste of money?

4) What is your favorite part of the SEO campaign?

5) Do you offer SEO tutorials, courses or certificates? Why or why not?

My Answers:

1) I enjoy reading SEO news from SearchEngineLand.com. For example, today I read an article on why you shouldn’t use Google Ads’ seasonality adjustments for COVID-19 fluctuations. I also frequent SearchEngineLand, Reddit and Quora.

2) There are many SEO plugins for WordPress that I like, but my favorites are the Yoast SEO plugin, the free All in One SEO plugin, and Rank Math which is one of the fastest growing WordPress plugins that will help you rank higher in the search engines.

3) I used to buy expensive programs when I just started out, and I kept buying and using SEO software for a long time. It was actually useful to become aware of all the little factors that can affect ones ranking score. However, I now have a vast amount of experience with search engine optimization and don’t feel I need the software any longer.

4) I really enjoy analytics, this is the part where you can see all the results of your hard work. You can also do a/b testing and you will learn how to optimize the page in order to further increase retention time and conversion rates. You can say I’m a real analytics junky. I usually work with the free version of Google analytics, although I have worked with other analytic software as well.

5) I have written several guides and tutorials which are available for download. Writing SEO tutorials and guides for beginners will help those just starting out, while providing highly relevant content on your website.

  1. Thank you for contacting me, Debby!

Unfortunately, I am merely an artist/poet/writer, who doesn’t understand SEO.

I tried to give some tips that might help people in a similar position as myself.

But don’t feel qualified to answer the questions above.

    Best wishes from Ken πŸ™‚

  3. I am grateful for your visiting my blog, and thinking me worthy of mention, Debby!

My piece “Blogging tips” was a one-off attempt to list things I think are best avoided.

Apart from a post called “Seven good things about blogging” (29th Dec 2019),
almost everything else on my site is creative writing (poetry and prose).
So it would probably not be of interest to those focussed on SEO/marketing.

Wish I was more tech-savvy, but poetry is hard enough for my old brain, these days!

  4. Thank you, Debby!

Actually I’ve never made any money from art, or writing, in my whole life.
I am poor, and unknown, except on WordPress.

Being the last of our family line, and with multiple health problems, I started a blog hoping not to be completely forgotten by the world, after my death.

  5. 1) I’ve worked as a copywriter/blogger/content manager on the digital side for 10 years and have always worked with SEO people, and I know the basics. But I’ve never felt comfortable making that a true “offering” of mine. Wanting to change that. I know there’s back-end stuff that’s more in the realm of devs, but I’m looking exclusively at everything I can control as a content person, from keyword research to implementation in copy + CMS.

    2) I think a lot of it just has to do with the content of each business. If the business is highly visually appealing of course its going to shine on socials. If there’s something niche and searchable then seo and google will be that much stronger. I’ve seen some newer brand food places only focus on socials and absolutely nail it, delivering results that search could never produce. But with that said in normal circumstances i’m partial to focusing on google for most businesses.

    3) We own a high-profile domain, with a great brand, awesome community, and over 600k authentic followers across our social media channels. Years ago when our site was small, we made some terrible engineering decisions and incorrectly executed several site migrations that significantly impacted our SEO performance (this was before we even knew what SEO really was). As our company grew, we realized we had problems and threw six-figures (possibly seven.. literally breaks my heart to type that) in engineering at the problem but the situation continued to deteriorate. That was 18 months ago, and today our search traffic is down 96% (680k monthly users from search in Jan 2018, to 29k monthly users from search in July 2019). Our SEO challenges are pretty complicated with all the layers of mistakes, so your typical SEO consultant has not been able to offer any valuable insight.

As an example of how crazy our problems are… GSC is saying we have 16 pages with errors, 0 valid with warnings, 18.2k valid pages, 6.01m excluded pages… but we only have a content library of about 10k articles!

According to MozPro we have a domain authority of 81, which is comparable to our top competitors, but we’re generating 1/100th of their search traffic!

    4) I’m trying to move away from guest posting. I just feel doing too much of it will come back to bite me. I only guest post on good websites now. I feel 20 good links is better than 50 okay ones.

However, I’m trying image link building with Flickr, infographic outreach, and asking for links. Guest post is by far the easiest method though. I’d rather be more white hat and focus more on long-term growth which I don’t have to worry about because of the dodgy links I’ve built.

With Flickr, I got 100 images made very cheaply and I’m hoping people will use them and link back to me. I’ve already got 10-15 good links from this. My current focusing is on how to rank my images. There’s no good image SEO courses. I’m think about uploading them to other image websites such as Pixabay etc.

Mentioning websites with press pages is a nice way to get links too. I’m also trying to learn which type of articles my competitors get natural links from and replicating that.

    5) SEO services aren’t going away anytime soon. A plumber doesn’t have the know-how or the time to setup a google search console or an analytics tracking code to his wix website.

Not just that, but they’ll have to move towards Local SEO, and possibly some paid ad campaigns as well to become a more integrated marketing services provider.

  6. Thanks for your elaborate reply. About your traffic drop, it sounds like you have been penalized for the amount of content posted. Content farms and even major sites such as e-bay have had problems with this, and the time frame you mention matches a known related algorithm update. As such it is better to post once a week on seven different blogs opposed to seven times a week to one blog, additionally I also try to avoid publishing more than once daily, something which is also recommended by Google (if you publish more frequently on blogger the image will show small or be unavailable on Google plus). Hope this helps.

  7. Hi Debby! Thankyou for the nomination. However, I don’t think I’m qualified enough to talk about SEO as I have a personal blog πŸ™‚
